Handyman in West Springfield, MA

West Springfield sits directly across the Connecticut River from downtown Springfield, reached in a few minutes over the Memorial Bridge or the North End Bridge. It's a town of roughly 28,000 people with the Westfield River running through its southern half, and it has several distinct sections: the downtown around Elm Street and the town common, Merrick in the southeast corner along the river, Mittineague to the southwest, the Memorial area by the fairgrounds, and the hillier, more suburban neighborhoods to the west and north. The housing mixes two-families and older single-family homes from the early 1900s near downtown and Merrick, 1940s and 1950s capes on the grid streets, ranches and raised ranches from the 1960s and 1970s farther out, and condominium complexes along the main roads. West Springfield also knows storms. The June 1, 2011 tornado crossed the river and hit Merrick hard, and many houses there were repaired or rebuilt afterward, so you'll find old and newer construction side by side on the same blocks.

West Springfield's best-known landmark is the Eastern States Exposition grounds on Memorial Avenue, home to the Big E, the large New England fair held every September, along with Storrowton Village and events through the rest of the year. Riverdale Street, which is Route 5, is the town's busy shopping strip, and Westfield Street, Route 20, runs west toward Westfield. I-91 follows the river along the eastern side of town, and the Mass Pike passes through the north end. Elm Street and the town common hold the older civic center, with the eighteenth-century Josiah Day House nearby, and Mittineague Park and the Bear Hole watershed give the town plenty of green space and trails. Because the town sits between two rivers, many lower streets are close to water, and basements and lower walls can stay damp in wet seasons. That makes good gutters, working downspouts and properly sealed doors more important here than people often realize.

What West Springfield neighbors book most

West Springfield is just across the river for us, and we know which bridges and roads clog up during the Big E, so we plan our schedule around it in September.

Jobs we handle a lot around West Springfield

In West Springfield we see a lot of plumbing fixture work: replacing kitchen and bath faucets, rebuilding toilets, swapping corroded shutoffs and supply lines, and putting in new disposals, all with our licensed plumbers making the connections. In the older two-families we fix doors that have drifted out of square, patch plaster and drywall, tighten stair railings and replace worn hardware. In the capes and ranches we hang new interior doors, install ceiling fans and new light fixtures, and build storage in basements and garages. Outside, it's gutters and downspout extensions, fence and gate repair after winter frost, pressure washing vinyl siding that greens up on shady sides, and caulking around windows and trim before the cold sets in.

Questions we hear in West Springfield

Do you work on two-families and rental properties?

Yes. West Springfield has a lot of two-families near downtown and in Merrick, and many owners live in one unit and rent the other. We can work through both units in one trip, coordinate access with tenants, and handle turnover lists between leases: paint touch-ups, door and lock adjustments, faucet and toilet repairs, and the smaller items an inspector tends to flag.

Can you fix water stains and drywall from a past leak or storm?

Yes. We check that the source is dry and repaired first, then cut out damaged board, replace it, tape and texture to match, and prime with a stain-blocker before painting. If we find active moisture or mold beyond a surface stain, we'll stop and recommend the right specialist before we patch anything.

My basement smells damp every spring. Is there anything simple to try first?

Often, yes. The most effective first step is usually outside: clean gutters, make sure every downspout discharges several feet from the foundation, and check that the soil slopes away from the house. Inside, we can seal gaps around the bulkhead door and dryer vent, and make sure the dryer and any bath fans vent outdoors. If water is actually coming through walls or the floor, that's a waterproofing specialist's job and we'll tell you so.
