Handyman in Sixteen Acres, Springfield

Sixteen Acres is Springfield's largest and most suburban neighborhood, in the city's southeast corner between East Forest Park, Pine Point and the East Longmeadow and Wilbraham lines. It takes its name from a sixteen-acre farm parcel bought in the early 1900s, and the area stayed mostly rural until after World War II. Then it filled in quickly, and today it holds much of the city's postwar housing: Cape Cods from the late 1940s and 1950s, long ranches and raised ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s, split-levels, and some newer homes and condominiums on the edges. Lots are bigger than in the older neighborhoods, most houses have a driveway and a garage or carport, and many have finished or partly finished basements. Western New England University's campus sits in the neighborhood, so there are rental houses near Wilbraham Road as well. For repairs, the age of the homes is the main story. A lot of them are now sixty to seventy-five years old, which means original or second-generation bath fixtures, tired doors and hardware, aging fences and gutters, and electrical and plumbing pieces that have reached the end of their run.

Wilbraham Road and Allen Street are the neighborhood's main roads, with the shopping plazas, pharmacies, coffee shops and restaurants that people use every day, and Parker Street runs north toward Boston Road and the Mass Pike. Greenleaf Park is a big part of neighborhood life, with fields, a community center and a branch library nearby, and Veterans Memorial Golf Course takes up a big stretch on the north side. Western New England University sits along Wilbraham Road, and the area's small ponds and private beach clubs, like Bass Pond and the Paddle Club, give summers a lakeside feel without leaving the city. Streets here are wide and mostly curving, with lawns, mature maples and oaks and plenty of backyard fences, decks and sheds. That means our work here is often split between inside and out: a faucet and a door in the morning, a sagging gate and a clogged gutter after lunch. In winter, ice and snow piled off the driveway tend to land against fences and gates, and the long ranch rooflines collect plenty of leaves in the fall.

What Sixteen Acres neighbors book most

Sixteen Acres is an easy drive for us down Parker Street or Wilbraham Road, and with driveways and garages on most lots, we can usually pull right up and get to work.

Jobs we handle a lot around Sixteen Acres

Common Sixteen Acres jobs include replacing kitchen and bath faucets, rebuilding or replacing running toilets, swapping out worn shutoff valves and supply lines, and replacing a garbage disposal that finally quit. Inside, we hang new interior doors or re-hang old ones, fix bifold and sliding closet doors, patch drywall in finished basements, and install ceiling fans in bedrooms that never had them; our licensed electricians make those connections. Outside, we reset leaning fence posts and repair gates that sag after a winter of frost heave, clean and re-pitch gutters on long ranch roofs, and pressure wash siding, walks and decks. Garages here are real garages, so we build shelving, wall storage and ceiling racks to get bikes, tools and seasonal gear off the floor. For WNE-area rentals, we also handle turnover punch lists between tenants.

Questions we hear in Sixteen Acres

My 1950s cape still has a lot of original parts. What usually needs attention first?

In capes this age, the usual suspects are the bathroom and kitchen plumbing, the doors and the exterior water handling. Faucets, shutoff valves and toilet parts wear out; we replace them and swap old rigid or braided lines for new supply lines while we're there. Interior doors drift out of square and closet doors fall off their tracks. Outside, gutters and downspouts are often undersized or pitched wrong. A walk-through with us is a good way to sort out which items matter now and which can wait.

Can you replace the old bathroom fan and light in my ranch?

Yes. We can swap an outdated ceiling light, replace a noisy or weak bath exhaust fan with a quieter, properly sized one, and put dimmers or a timer switch on the controls. Our licensed electricians handle the wiring, and we make sure the fan actually vents where it should, not into the attic, which matters a lot in a Massachusetts winter.

My fence gate drags every spring. Why does that keep happening?

Frost heave is the usual cause. In our winters the ground freezes deep, and posts that weren't set below the frost line or in good drainage get pushed up and tipped a little each year, so the gate drops and drags. We reset or replace the hinge post with deeper footing and good drainage, add an anti-sag kit or diagonal brace, and adjust the hinges and latch so the gate swings freely again.

Can you work around my schedule if I'm at work all day?

Yes. Many Sixteen Acres jobs are outdoors or in the garage, so we can often do them while you're out if you leave access. For indoor work we offer a set arrival window and can start early or finish later in the day on request. We'll text when we're on the way and send photos of the finished work.
