Gutter Cleaning & Repair in Springfield, MA

In Springfield, gutters have two jobs and one enemy. They have to carry off summer downpours and spring snowmelt, and they have to survive winter, which is the enemy. When gutters are clogged in November, the first thaw sends meltwater into a trough full of wet leaves, it freezes overnight, and ice builds back up the roof edge. That's how ice dams start, and the result is water backing up under shingles, staining ceilings and running down inside walls. The weight of ice and packed snow also bends hangers, pulls spikes out of the fascia and tears whole runs loose, especially when snow slides off a steep slate or metal roof. The city's big street trees, mostly maples and oaks, drop their leaves from mid-October into early December, and in spring they follow with maple seeds, oak catkins and pine pollen that wash into gutters with the first rain.

We clean every gutter by hand, bag the debris and then flush each run and downspout with water to confirm it drains. Downspouts get cleared top to bottom, including the elbows and the underground drain lines many older houses have, as far as we can reach. While we're on the ladder, we replace loose spikes with screw-in hangers, reseal leaking seams and corners, re-slope sagging sections so water runs to the outlet, and reattach downspouts. On older Victorians and colonials with built-in wooden box gutters, we clean them, check the lining for cracks and seal small leaks. We also look over the roof edge, fascia and drip edge for the damage ice dams leave behind and send you photos. Leaves and debris go with us, or into your paper leaf bags if you prefer to put them out.

What this covers

  • Hand cleaning of all gutters and box gutters
  • Downspout flushing and underground drain clearing
  • Leaf and debris bagging and haul-away
  • Screw-in hanger replacement for loose spikes
  • Seam, corner and end cap resealing
  • Re-sloping sagging or ice-bent runs
  • Downspout extensions and splash blocks
  • Gutter guard installation and cleaning
  • Photo report on fascia and ice-dam damage
A note from around here: The tree-lined streets of Forest Park, Longmeadow and Maple Hill fill gutters fast every fall, while older homes in McKnight, Upper Hill and the Forest Park Heights section often still have wooden box gutters that need cleaning and careful sealing.

How a gutter cleaning & repair visit usually goes

Set Up and Inspect

We set ladders on solid footing with standoffs to protect the gutters, cover beds and walks, and look over the roof edge before climbing.

Clean Every Run

Leaves, seeds, shingle grit and debris come out by hand and go straight into bags, so nothing lands on your lawn or plantings.

Flush the System

We run water through every gutter and downspout to confirm flow, clearing jams in elbows and underground lines.

Repair and Document

Loose hangers, leaks, bad slope and detached downspouts are fixed, and we send photos of anything else that needs attention.

Where your gutter water goes matters as much as the gutters themselves. Many Springfield houses, especially older ones, have downspouts that run into clay or cast iron pipes that disappear underground, and those pipes clog with leaves and roots or crack over time. When that happens, water backs up and spills at the foundation, and in a house with a stone or block basement, that usually shows up as a wet wall in spring. We test underground lines and can redirect downspouts to the surface with extensions and splash blocks. Keeping water a few feet from the foundation is one of the cheapest ways to keep a basement dry.

What shapes the price in Springfield

Gutter cleaning is priced mostly by the length of gutter, the height of the house and how full the gutters are. A single-story ranch with a normal leaf load is the simplest job. Two-and-a-half-story Victorians, three-deckers, steep driveways, porches and additions that block ladder access, and gutters packed after a season without cleaning take more time. Box gutters and gutter guards add steps. Repairs like new hangers, resealing or re-sloping are priced on top, and they're cheaper to do while we're already up there. Regular fall and spring cleanings usually cost less over time than dealing with an overflow or ice dam.

Neighbors often ask

When should I clean my gutters in Springfield?

The most important cleaning is in late fall, after the leaves come down, usually from early to late November. Clean gutters going into winter are your best defense against ice dams. A second cleaning in late spring clears maple seeds, catkins and pollen before summer storms. Homes under heavy tree cover, especially oaks, which hold onto their leaves late, may need an extra fall visit to catch the last drop.

Can you fix gutters damaged by ice and snow?

Yes. After a heavy winter, we see bent gutters, broken hangers and runs pulled away from the fascia, especially below valleys and on the side where snow slides off the roof. We straighten or replace damaged sections, add stronger hangers closer together and reseal the seams. If the fascia behind the gutter has rotted from repeated ice dams, we'll show you and can replace it before rehanging the gutter.

What are box gutters, and can you work on them?

Box gutters, sometimes called Yankee gutters, are built into the roof edge or cornice of many older homes in Springfield, especially Victorians and colonials from the late 1800s and early 1900s. They're lined with metal or membrane and can leak into the cornice and walls if the lining cracks. We clean them, check the lining and seal small leaks. If the lining has failed over a long stretch, we'll show you and recommend a roofer who works with box gutters.

Will gutter guards stop ice dams?

No. Gutter guards keep leaves out and reduce how often gutters need cleaning, but ice dams come from heat escaping through the roof and melting snow, which refreezes at the cold edge. Guards can even hold snow and ice in place. The real fixes for ice dams are better attic insulation and ventilation, which we can point you toward. In the meantime, clean gutters, a roof rake after heavy snow and heat cables in problem spots can help.

What do you do with the leaves you remove?

Usually we bag them and haul them away. If you'd rather keep them for compost or put them out yourself, we can fill your paper leaf bags. Springfield collects yard waste curbside every other week, from April through December, in paper leaf bags or barrels, and residents can also drop leaves at Bondi's Island.
